Yoga Week 14

As this is my final blogpost, I'd like to reflect on this great experience. Between the karma project, essays, and the yoga classes I attended throughout the semester I have had a new appreciation to the emotional, spiritual, and physical benefits from yoga. I not only have felt more relaxed and rested, but my anxiety seems to have diminished because of practicing. This class I went to this week was similar to the previous classes. Sandy focused on the crow position and sirsasana. Everyone in class this week have been going to her classes for a few months now so there were no newbies. She was trying to let us hone these positions. Overall this class has been a wonderful experience and I've actually decided to declare a holistic health minor now because of this. Because I am a nursing major, I had only been exposed to the biomedical approach to healthcare. I now have a new interest in the alternative and holistic health approach. Have a great summer!

Yoga Practice Week 13

Well this is the last week of practice before finals. Although we don't have to blog about experiences after this week, I still plan on going to yoga especially gentle yoga next week during finals. I went to Carlos's class this week and it was pretty much the same as previous weeks. I'm almost getting sick of chaturanga by this point. Maybe I should try to mix up my practices and take another hot yoga class or different classes at other studios. I can say that I have successfully mastered the pigeon and the crane pose through attending these classes at Tilton Fitness.

Yoga Practice Week 12

This week, I yet again went to Sandy's class and still struggled with trying to get into a hand stand. I was able to master the crow pose however! I've also noticed that my lower back is not hurting as much as it used to. I'm starting to feel not only the physical, but also the spiritual and emotional effects doing this weekly yoga practice is having on my body. I can only imagine how I would feel if I went more than just once a week. I was able to get into a tree pose without falling over so my balance is improving a lot as well!

Yoga Practice Week 11

As the semester is coming to an end, I am stressing out a lot with tests in the nursing program. After speaking to my advisor and telling her that I am also enrolled in this class, she suggested that I practice gentle yoga before out test that occurred this Wednesday. My test was at 2:00 and I attended a 10:45 class with Diane this week. I was a little hesitant at first because my usual study practices have been to cram right up to the time of the test. This week, I decided to do yoga before in an attempt to reduce my test anxiety that I have. This gentle class focused on meditating and stretching. No intense exercises and poses were held. I was able to focus my breathing and become one with my environment and self. I ended up getting my grade back for my test and I did the best I've ever done on it. I really want to implement this routine into my schedule on test days.

Yoga Practice Week 10

This week, I made it back to Tilton Fitness and went to Sandy's Fitness Yoga class again. This class was a mix of previous classes and was moderately intense. However, after last week's hot yoga experience, I was glad to see her again! The majority of her class focused on the pigeon pose and the head stand. With her help this week, I was actually able to get to a head stand. She had to be holding me the whole time or else I'd fall however. I'm so close! I really want to get the headstand position by the end of this semester.

Yoga Practice Week 9

This week I was home visiting my parents so I went to a local studio near them in Burlington, NJ called Bhakti Yoga. This was a hot yoga class. This was very different from what I was used to at Tilton Fitness. The instructor here was shirtless and everyone was dressed very skimpy clothes. In fact, the instructor actually told me to take my shirt off too. During the class, the teacher had us do intense Bikram style positions and breathing. He actually was not doing the poses with us but just telling us which poses to do. I relied on the person in front of me so I could watch her and figure out what we were supposed to be doing. I was successful at getting into the first 10 positions (Pranayama through dandayma). For some reason, I had extreme difficulty balancing in the 11th (Tadasana) position. Once I left the class I felt like the rest of my day was shot and was super worn out. It was nice to mix up the styles of yoga though!

Yoga practice Week 8

This week I honestly got sick while attending the fitness yoga class taught by Carlos and I had to leave the class towards the end. It seems like for some reason this week was a lot more intense and I literally got sick from it. It probably wasn't the best idea for me to eat less than an hour before practice. Carlos had us do a lot of poses that involed by head being down such as rag doll, sirasana, and  Sarvangasana. I'm not toally turned away from yoga because of this experience but it defiantly made me reevaluate when I eat dinner. On a side note, Carlos came outside and made sure I was okay. Kind of embarrassing but it is what it is.
